  Sanitation data at global level

The percentage of people worldwide who have access to improved sanitation facilities has risen from 49% in 1990 to 59% in 2004. Progress has been achieved both within urban - with some 698 million more people served - and rural settings (510 million more people served).

These figures can be considered as fairly representative of the global situation since over 91% of the world population is taken into consideration in these statistics.
