  Sub-Saharan Africa: water supply data

Sub-Saharan Africa has seen some progress in rural areas: 62 million more people have gained access to water supply in rural settings between 1990 and 2004 (+ 6%).

In the same time although there has been a 2% decrease in the percentage of people served in urban areas, 95 million more people have gained access to water supply in these areas. This can be explained by a combination of demographic growth as well as rural to urban migrations which has led to a 122 million population increase in towns/cities.
